The Cropper Lads

from The Awkward Recruit by Mawkin:Causley

/

about

Jim first learnt this one from Sandra Kerrr who probably got it from Roy Palmer. It dates from 1811 when the Luddites rose up in response to the introduction of mechanised shearing frames in the woollen mills of Wes Yorkshire. The tune that follows is John Hunters Number One, a version of Cock of the North. John Hunter was a wonderful old melodeon player from Thaxted discovered by Simon Ritchie. Dedicated to the life of Luke McGee.
